This is one debate that I truly don’t get, and I will always be amazed as to why it’s a debate, should someone ever ask me.
I’m a girl that does stand up comedy, which is a minority in itself, but then add on the fact that I’m only 16. I’ve been doing stand up for about a year now, and I’ve absolutely loved it. If I’m not funny, then I am probably ruining a lot of people’s lives by continuously showing up to gigs.
To me, stand up comedy has nothing to do with gender. You’re either good or you aren’t (this is something I was once told). I guess I must be good (or someone should tell me otherwise real quick). I often feel like I’m not good enough or that everyone is better than me - but I actually really love watching other comedians, probably more than I do actually performing. It makes me feel better because I’m laughing.
I can feel intimidated, but it’s not because I’m a girl and am in the green room with 97% guys, it’s because I am intimidated by every single person on the planet, regardless of gender.
Most of my favourite comedians are females. And it’s not just because I’m a girl all about “girl power” or whatever, it’s just because they’re fucking funny and brilliantly clever. So my answer to the question “Are women funny?” is:
Who cares? They’re going to do it anyway, and most of them rock at it.
